The client
Arnold White Group are a family-owned business tracing its beginnings back over 100 years. They have grown from quarrying and selling high quality sand into a multi-disciplined company with interests in renewable energy generation, land promotion and development with a vision to create future proof, sustainable developments.
The challenge
Checkley Wood proposes the delivery of a net zero carbon new village across some 322ha. 73% of the land comprises current of former sand quarries which have been in operation since 1916. The land, currently within the Green Belt, sits north of Leighton Buzzard and adjacent to the A5.
The solution
The proposition is to deliver a net zero carbon settlement with 210ha of green space and new country park, c3,400 energy efficient homes, 7ha of employment land, 3 community hubs, 3 primary schools, innovative care facilities with specialist career training, and a new museum.
To achieve net zero, the proposals incorporate two wind turbines and two solar arrays which could deliver 100% of the development’s energy needs from renewable energy.
The scheme is both being promoted through the Central Beds Council Local Plan review.
