The client
Barchester deliver the highest quality care services to more than 11,000 people in more than 200 homes across England, Scotland and Wales.
The challenge
We submitted a full planning application on behalf of Barchester Healthcare for the erection of a 52-bedroom care home replacing an underutilised golf driving range in Berkhamsted.
The application was submitted following the refusal of an earlier scheme by others. Arrow advised on matters relating to the refusal and changes necessary to address issues raised by the Council. The scheme comprises a part one and a half, part two-storey building designed in to reflect a typical English Farmstead layout and the character of the area. It will provide high-quality living spaces and care to those in need, in an environment carefully designed to address the needs of the elderly and people who suffer from dementia.
The solution
The development will play an important role in boosting housing supply, by freeing up underutilised family housing and bringing that back into the housing market.
The existing Hospice to the southeast of the Site, which is highly regarded within the community, provides an important opportunity to enhance the relationship between the two facilities and create a new community hub in this location.
“It’s really important to us to be part of a project that will address both the care and housing needs of the local community, create a health hub for the wider area while comprise an improvement to the current state of the site in terms of ecology, light pollution, noise pollution, and amenities.” – Statement from Rafaela
